Which Qualifications Help You Get Better Teaching Jobs in Lahore

Two teachers apply for the same O Level English job at a school in Gulberg. Both have a master’s in English. Both have three years of experience. One gets a better offer. The difference? She did a short TEFL course last summer and can show the lesson plans she made during it.

It sounds small, but it happens a lot. When it comes to teaching jobs in Lahore, the right qualification doesn’t always mean the biggest degree. Sometimes it’s a short course that fills the exact gap a school is worried about.

So which qualifications actually help, and which ones just look nice on paper? Here’s what we’ve learned from schools and teachers we work with at Profyd. So which qualifications help you get better teaching jobs in Lahore? Let’s look closely.

Which Qualifications Matter Most for Teaching Jobs in Lahore

Start with this. Most private schools in Lahore care about two things before anything else. Do you know your subject well? And can you teach it to their students? Every qualification you have should help answer one of those two questions. If it doesn’t, it probably won’t move the needle much, no matter how good it looks.

A degree answers the first one. Teaching training and experience answer the second. The teachers who get the best jobs usually have something for both.

Your subject degree

For secondary and higher classes, your subject degree is the base. A BS or master’s in Maths, Physics, Chemistry, Biology or English is what most schools expect for those subjects. Some schools ask for a 16-year degree as a minimum, especially for O and A Level.

Your grades matter less than people think. A school might glance at your CGPA, but very few decide on it. What they want to know is whether you actually understand the subject at the level you’ll teach.

Teaching degrees like B.Ed and M.Ed

A B.Ed is the most common teaching qualification in Pakistan. It teaches lesson planning, classroom management and how children learn. Many schools prefer it, and some public sector jobs require it.

For private schools, it’s often a plus rather than a must. But it can help you get a slightly higher starting salary, and it gives you real classroom practice through teaching placements. If you’re planning to teach for many years, it’s usually worth doing. An M.Ed can help later if you want to move into a coordinator or head role.

The ADE and four-year B.Ed

If you’re still in college and know you want to teach, the Associate Degree in Education or the four-year B.Ed (Hons) are worth looking at. They’re built for future teachers from the start, with more classroom time than a general degree.

Qualifications for primary teaching

Primary schools often look for something slightly different. Subject depth matters less, and knowing how young children learn matters more. Early childhood education courses, Montessori training and B.Ed with a primary focus all help here.

We’ve written a separate guide on what qualifications primary teacher jobs require if that’s the level you’re aiming for.

Short courses that make a real difference

This is where many teachers can get ahead without spending years studying. A few short courses carry real weight with Lahore schools.

For English teachers, TEFL, TESOL or CELTA show you can teach language, not just literature. CELTA is the hardest and most respected, but also the most expensive. TEFL is cheaper and still helps a lot, especially for online jobs. English teachers should also read our guide to essential English teaching skills.

For Cambridge schools, any Cambridge teacher training is a big plus. It tells the school you already understand how their exams work and what examiners look for. Our post on how international curriculum teaching improves a teacher’s life explains why it’s worth the effort.

Skills certificates that schools like

Schools now want teachers who can use technology without fuss. Short courses in Google Classroom, Microsoft Teams or online teaching tools can help, especially at schools that run hybrid classes.

Don’t go overboard, though. Ten small certificates on your CV can look like padding. Two or three that match the job are better.

Experience counts as a qualification

Many fresh graduates forget this. Teaching experience is a qualification too, and schools often rate it higher than an extra degree. Home tuition, academy batches, teaching practice and volunteer teaching all count.

Write it on your CV the same way you’d write a job. How long, which classes, which subjects, and one real result. “Taught matric chemistry to 6 home tuition students for two years” is a solid line.

Which subjects are in demand

Some qualifications open more doors simply because the subject is in demand. Maths, science and English teachers are always needed, and good ones are hard to find. Our post on teaching jobs in Pakistan with the highest demand looks at which subjects schools are struggling to fill right now.

What about public school jobs?

Government school jobs in Punjab work differently. They usually come through official recruitment drives with fixed rules on degrees, age and marks. If that’s your goal, follow the official announcements closely and check the exact rules each time, because they change between drives.

Private schools are more flexible. They’ll often look past a missing qualification if your demo is strong and your experience is good.

Qualifications that matter less than you think

An MPhil looks impressive, but for most school teaching jobs it doesn’t change much. It can help for A Level and college jobs, but for Grade 6 to 10, a strong demo will beat it easily.

The same goes for a long list of online certificates from free platforms. They show you’re keen to learn, which is good, but schools rarely hire because of them.

How to show your qualifications on a CV

Put the most relevant one first, not the newest. If you’re applying for an O Level Physics job, your physics degree and any Cambridge training go at the top. Your unrelated diploma can go further down, or leave it out.

Keep it simple. Name of the qualification, where you did it, and the year. No need for long descriptions.

Planning your next qualification

If you’re already teaching and want to grow, think about where you want to be in five years. Want to teach A Level? Strengthen your subject. Want to become a coordinator? Look at an M.Ed or leadership training. Want to teach online for foreign students? A TEFL or international teaching course makes sense.

Maths teachers in particular have lots of options here. Our guide to career opportunities for mathematics teachers in Pakistan shows where those different paths can lead.

What schools ask about your qualifications in interviews

Don’t be surprised if a principal asks what you actually learned in your B.Ed. They’re not testing your memory. They want to know if the course changed how you teach. Have one clear example ready, like a lesson planning method you still use, or something your supervisor told you during teaching practice that stuck.

The same goes for short courses. If you did a TEFL course, be ready to talk about one activity you learned there and how you used it with real students. A qualification you can talk about with real examples is worth far more than one you can only name.

Studying while you work

Most teachers in Lahore don’t have the luxury of studying full time. The good news is that many B.Ed and M.Ed programmes have evening or weekend options, and many short courses are fully online.

Just be realistic about your time. Teaching is tiring, and copies don’t check themselves. Pick one course at a time, and try to choose one that helps you in your current job. That way, what you study on Saturday helps you in class on Monday.

Watch out for fake or weak institutes

Not every institute offering teaching courses is worth your money. Before you pay, check whether the degree is recognised by HEC, and ask teachers you know whether schools take that certificate seriously. A course that costs less but isn’t recognised can end up wasting a year of your life.

For international courses like CELTA, check you’re booking with an official centre. If a deal sounds too cheap, it usually is.

Don’t wait for the perfect CV

One more thing. Lots of teachers keep delaying their applications because they want one more course first. Don’t do that. Apply now with what you have, and study alongside your job. Real classroom time will teach you more than another certificate.

We’ve seen teachers spend two years collecting courses while their classmates got jobs, built experience and moved up. By the time the first group applied, the second group was already earning more. Courses are good. But they work best alongside teaching, not instead of it. Start where you are, and keep adding as you go.

If you’re qualified for younger classes, the Primary Teacher Jobs listing is open now. Read the requirements and put your most relevant qualification at the top of your CV before you apply.

Conclusion

The best qualifications for teaching jobs in Lahore are the ones that answer the school’s two big questions. Do you know the subject, and can you teach it? A strong subject degree covers the first. A B.Ed, a focused short course or solid teaching experience covers the second.

You don’t need every certificate out there. You need the right two or three, plus a good demo. When you’re ready, explore teaching careers with Profyd.

FAQs

Is a B.Ed required for teaching jobs in Lahore?

For most private schools, no. It’s a plus and can help with salary. Some public sector and larger school jobs do ask for it, so check each job post.

Which short course is best for English teachers?

CELTA is the most respected, but TEFL or TESOL are cheaper and still helpful, especially for online teaching roles.

Does an MPhil help me get a better school job?

Not usually for school-level jobs. It can help for A Level and college teaching, but for most classes a strong demo and experience matter more.

Can I teach in Lahore with just a bachelor’s degree?

Yes. Many private schools hire teachers with a 14 or 16-year degree, especially for primary and middle classes. Experience and a good demo help a lot.

What qualification helps me become a coordinator?

An M.Ed or leadership training helps, along with several years of strong teaching. Most schools promote coordinators from within, so doing well where you are matters most.

Are online teaching courses taken seriously by Lahore schools?

Some are. Courses from known bodies like Cambridge or recognised universities carry weight. Random free certificates show you like learning, but they rarely change a hiring decision on their own. If you’re unsure, ask a coordinator at a school you’d like to work at which courses they respect.
